THE VACATION REGION OF TEGERNSEE-SCH LIERSEE-WEN
DELSTEIN
| Where the Heart of Bavaria Beats: |

|
| A single, special moment can be enough to make an entire
vacation unforgettable: Like standing on the shores of Tegernsee Lake, with
the waves gently rippling across the water, the blue sky as radiant as the
azure waters and Wallberg Mountain rising before you on the horizon. Even if
you are only taking a short break from a strenuous seminar in a comfortable
nearby conference hotel, you will surely feel it: The heart of Bavaria beats
right here, in the County of Miesbach. |
| |
|
| Miesbach County, home to the Tegernsee Valley and
Schliersee-Wendelstein region, is one of Germany’s most beautiful vacation
areas. Located south of Munich, it is also very convenient to reach. The
many world-renowned sights and landmarks offer ideal destinations for day
excursions, while the southernmost mountains are nothing short of
breathtaking. Atop peaks such as Wallberg and Wendelstein, spectacular views
of the Alps and green valleys abound. In the north, a fascinating landscape
of rolling hills and moor lakes awaits, as does the picturesque Mangfall
Valley. |

|
| |
|
| The region’s 17 communities include popular cure and holiday
towns, such as Tegernsee, Bad Wiessee, Rottach-Egern, Kreuth and Gmund, all
in the Tegernsee Valley, and Bayrischzell, Schliersee and Fischbachau in the
Schliersee-Wendelstein region. Enjoy a leisurely stroll down Seestrasse, the
luxury shopping mile in Rottach-Egern, or try your luck in the new casino in
Bad Wiessee. In Schliersee, you can taste Bavaria’s only homemade whiskey,
or head to the town of Valley to listen to vintage sounds in the Organ
Museum. On a whole, Miesbach’s rich tapestry of art and culture is as fine
as any in Germany, and the local restaurants pride themselves in serving
authentic Bavarian cuisine with an extra helping of hospitality. |

|
| |
|
| For a contemplative retreat, or to explore the Bavarian
religious tradition, make sure to visit the pilgrimage town of Birkenstein.
The area’s churches feature splendid frescoes and altars by renowned
artists, and such long-lived customs as Leonhardiritte, the Rosstag (in
Rottach-Egern) and the Alt Schlierseer Kirchtag are events that continue to
fascinate visitors. |

|
| |
| The Tegernsee-Schliersee-Wendelstein region offers a wealth
of recreational activities for young and old alike. In summer, nothing
matches a refreshing swim in one of the nearby lakes, set against the
backdrop of the mountains. Tegernsee and Schliersee are the largest bodies
of water, but Seehamer Lake, near Weyarn, and the Hackensee, near
Holzkirchen, offer idyllic alternatives. Beach volleyball courts are
available in Tegernsee and Schliersee, and plenty of golf courses and riding
stables are also nearby. Here, relaxation and adventure go hand in hand, as
soaring, hang- gliding, climbing, hiking,
mountain-biking, sailing and wind-surfing opportunities abound. |
| |
|
| The winter is also a high season, especially in the newly
expanded ski resorts of Spitzingsee and Sutten, though skiers and
snowboarders will find the long, groomed runs on Sudelfeld and Wendelstein
Mountain to their liking, as well. Wallberg is home to Germany’s longest
toboggan run, where sledders will enjoy the high-speed thrills, and the
German Ski Federation has installed Nordic Activities Centers in
Bayrischzell and Schliersee. Here, cross country skiing, Nordic snow walking
and Nordic cruising are popular activities to explore. |

|
| |
|
| Miesbach County’s health and weilness offering is just as
impressive, including many world-class rehabilitation and cure facilities.
Equally soothing are the iodine-sulphur spa in Bad Wiessee and the Kneipp
facilities in Bayrischzell. |
