Sports and Recreation

Germany , Tegernsee
Imagine your group has been hiking up the mountain for 4 hours, each of you equipped with binoculars, a Brotzeit snack and a thermos with tea. By now, you are perched high atop a cliff behind the Rottach Aim, with a clear view of Setzberg Mountain, waiting to finally catch a rare glimpse of the king of the skies.” Yes, you and your group are underway on a very special l3ird-watching tour, in hopes of setting your eyes upon a majestic golden eagle. Suddenly, you realize this is your lucky day, as one of the mighty birds soars high above you, its wingspan of almost 2 meters letting it almost effortlessly circle above.

This one-of-a-kind experien is available to fortunate visitors on one of the 50 guided tours offered each year by the Miesbach-Tegernsee Kreissparkasse, as part of a unique golden eagle conservation project in the Mangfall Mountains that the bank sponsors. Even better, it is just one of the many natural and recreational highlights that await you when you visit the Tegernsee-Schliersee-Wendelstein vacation region. For example, you can also head to the Aquadome, Bavaria’s largestfresh-water aquarium, in the town of Bad Wiessee, where you can observe 20 different species - including pike, char, entire schools of whitefish and the indigenous crayfish.

If your group prefers sporting activities, then you have also come to the right place! Most towns in the region offer bicycle rentals, and the area is known for its expansive network of bike paths and trails. The manyoptions available include traveling along the Via Bavarica Tyrolensis trail all the way to Tyrol (Austria), exploring the Lake Constance-Konigssee bicycle path or taking advantage of guided tours - such as Von Baum zu Baum, which reveals interesting information about the local trees. Whatever your level or interest, be it leisurely cyclist or hard-core mountain biker, you will find a tour to match. As a tip, keep in mind that the bike paths in the northern part of the region have a charm all their own, as well as fewer hills to conquer than the trails along the southern routes.

Other sports and fitness opportunities abound in Miesbach and Tegernsee, as well. The Point recreation facilities in Tegernsee, for example, offer beach volleyball courts for your very own tournament. And, in Bayrischzell and Schliersee, groups can enjoy a Nordic walking experience complete with expert trainers and fitness testing.

Those who prefer more easy-going activities may wish to visit Weyarn, where a walk along the “cultural path” introduces you to works of art by local artists. Another exciting option is the observatory atop Wendelstein Mountain for a close-up look at the stars. In the town of Miesbach, the theater and musical shows in Waitzinger Keller should not be missed. And this represents lust a sampling of what’s available!

Visitors will need to budget plenty of time if they wish to take advantage of the region’s many recreational
opportunities, and that applies in winter, too! Attractive winter options include the recently modernized
Spitzingsee ski resort, Sudelfeld, which ranks as Germany’s largest interconnected ski area, the fastpaced toboggan run on Wallberg Mountain and plenty of prepared cross-country ski tracks. For group fun,
nothing beats an Eisstock tournament - a sport with similarities to curling, also played on an ice court.
Many towns have clubs that make their well-groomed courts and equipment available to the public, so
make sure to give it a try!
