Himālaia Hotels: Comfort and Commitment

Andorra / Spain
Our hotel concept is very much geared to the environment. The Hotel “Himālaia” in Soldeu is therefore an extraordinary “base camp” from which to go out and discover valleys and mountains, and to open oneself up to a world of intense, unforgettable experiences.

The decoration is inspired by the mountains from which they get their name. Wood and fine materials on the dominant ochre and earth tones  yield a surprising, welcoming atmosphere that constantly reminds their guests they are for leisure and to get away from it all.

Our Walking Team

At Himālaia Hotels, experiencing the mountains means understanding them. The activities we offer our guests go far beyond purely physical pursuits. They involve discovering the fauna and flora, understanding how people and nature interact, and discovering landscapes, colours, smells, and sounds, etc..

The Himālaia team of guides is composed of expert professionals with passion for the mountains. They organise and select the pursuit so that everyone can experience an adventure to suit them, both in winter and summer.

The hotel has three mini-bus/jeeps and 6 to 8 guides depending on the season. The hotel publishes a weekly list of walks it will provide for category 1 & 2 guests above. These guided walks take place between 9.00 and 13.00 hours with a short drive to a number of local valley areas. The walks go up to glacial lake level. We invite you to use these hotel walks and others to extend the range and arrive back at the hotel about 15.00/1600 hours. We planned an alternative return route to the hotel. The hotel also offered on the occasional day, an afternoon cultural visit or an all day alternative to walking, i.e. one of the adrenaline type activity trips at extra cost.

Guests belonging to a club group enjoy a customised holiday designed exactly for their group wants and needs. Larger club groups clearly had divided their number into perhaps two groups, each group with different criteria, e.g. mountain peak altitude attainment versus glacial lake altitude versus cultural visit or activity trip, etc.

The hotel’s experienced and informative guides used the three hotel mini-bus/jeeps to get to any part Andorra; not just the immediate local area; all this at no extra cost. If club group numbers indicated the need for a coach, we noticed that the hotel hired coaches some days presumably incurring extra transport costs for those group guests.

Activities (optional) with extra charges

  • Via Ferrata – 18 euros (climbing ironwork set into mountain rock – limited to small groups of about 6 people)

  • Rafting – 45 euros (with Jeep-Tour included)

  • Canyoning – 40 euros

  • Caldea – luxurious thermal centre (all manner of water pampering activities) 31 euros

Andorra

Andorra is a land locked country covering 468 sq, kilometres and an average height of 1996m. It is south of the Pyrenean watershed and bordered by Aragon and Catalonia. In other words it nestles in the Eastern Pyrenees between Spain and France where the weather is more favourable than the Pyrenean west; affected by Atlantic Ocean conditions. Andorra is tri-lingual (French/Catalan/Spanish) but predominantly Catalan, as is its culture. The cost of living is comparable with Spain and much cheaper than the French Pyrenees or the Alps, whilst the scenery is equally as good. Tobacco products and alcoholic spirits are the cheapest in Europe.

Historically the economy relied on sheep, tobacco growing and smuggling. Today it is tourism; primarily skiing. Hotels either close when the snow goes; others actively encourage clients interested in other outdoor activities. The best example of this attitude is found at the Hotel Himalaia in Soldeu. Some gondola lifts operate in summer months, however, much of the best rambling scenery is in none skiing areas not serviced by gondola lifts.

In the main Andorran valley sits the road between Barcelona to Toulouse. It gradually gains height as it moves toward France climbing from 850m to 2409m. At the Spanish end of this road is the urbanised area of Andorra la Vella: one of the highest cities in Europe and a centre for duty free shopping. Amazingly just a few kilometres off the main road up a multitude of side valleys is unspoilt magnificent scenery ideal for ramblers of all fitness levels. Climbing out of the picturesque valleys leads to beautiful glacial lakes and above them to rugged mountain peaks (none above 3000m). Geology is very varied with many rock types.
