Art and Culture
Germany , Tegernsee
Regardless of what time of year you choose for a group visit, the County of Miesbach’s rich Bavarian tradition has something in the way of living customs and quality events for everyone: From the ornate, traditional costumes worn during the Alt-Schlierseer Kirchtag and classical music at the Oleg Kagan Music Festival in Kreuth, to authentic, traditional Trachten fashions made by tailors in Miesbach town. Many traditional events and festivals attract visitors and locals alike, such as the Alt-Schlierseer Kirchtag and boat procession on Schliersee Lake, the Leonhardi festivities and equestrian procession, the Rosstag in Rottach-Egern, the Trachten pilgrimage to Birkenstein, traditional Almkirtas celebrations and the Trachten and Crafts Days held in the Miesbach town square.

The area’s cultural heritage is also on display in numerous museums and churches. A very unique collection awaits visitors to the Kutschen-, Wagen- und Schlittenmuseum (Coach, Wagon and Sled Museum) in Rottach-Egern, while world-renowned artists are featured in the changing expositions held at the Olaf Gulbransson Museum in Tegernsee. The Altbayerisches Dorf (historic Bavarian village) in Neuhaus was founded by Markus Wasmeier, a local skiing legend, to provide hands-on insight into the, history of area farming. And the vintage organs on display in Valley’s Organ Museum can be seen and heard.

The magnificent St. Quirinus Church in Tegernsee stands as a monument to the historic importance of the Tegernsee Abbey, while a visit to the St. Sixtus Church in Schllersee reveals impressive stucco work and ceiling frescoes by Johann Baptist Zimmermann. The ocher-colored pilgrimage chapel in Wilparting, on lrschenberg Mountain, holds the remains of Saints Anian and Marinus. Conveniently located just off the autobahn that connects Munich and Salzburg, the tremendous backdrop views of the Bavarian Alps make the chapel one of Upper Bavaria’s most photographed sights.

Those who make it to a traditional Heimatabend (folk evening) will find it entertaining and informative at once. Many local Trachten societies hold them, giving visitors a chance to look over the shoulders of artisan tailors and shoemakers as they fashion Lederhosen and Haferlschuhe (traditional shoes). Lake festivals on Tegernsee and Schliersee abound with a mediterranean flair, while a show in an area theater - such as the Bauerntheater in Schliersee, the Volkstheater in Tegernsee and the Freies Landestheater Bayern performances in Miesbach town’s Waitzinger Keller - is sure to please after an excursion-filled day.

Visitors who come to the County of Miesbach will experience Bavarian art, culture and tradition at its finest. We would be pleased to help you arrange special group events, such as a Bavarian evening or a cozy Hüttenabend (evening of celebration in a mountain hut), to help make your experience even richer!
